Day 5
Day five started with frost on the pumpkin...literally. The dew settled on the tents, then froze. The tents were covered with ice droplets, the bikes had ice on the seats and windshields, and we were just a tad chilly.Yeah right! We were nearly frozen stiff! We decided to let the tents dry off a bit, so after showers and general clean up, we drove out to breakfast. Looking over the tops of our fogged up windshields. When you're cold, nothing beats a hot breakfast. A good breakfast was had by all.
After breaking camp, we headed out for Arches National Park in Utah.
This took us along some very scenic mileage along Blue Mesa Lake.
Beautiful country side.
Blue Mesa Lake The Dillon Pinnacles
After riding for a while I decided my shocks needed adjustment. So Jim got out the trusty Harley book and found a close dealer. The dealer we found was Black Canyon Harley Davidson in Montrose CO.
No, this is not Steve
Here we found Steve in maintenance. I told him my problem and he said "No problem" He adjusted my shocks and we were ready to go again. I think Steve recognized a kindred spirit, he told me that he has a Wide Glide too. It was not finished yet, but it looked really good.
Steve's Wide Glide
My Wide Glide
See the resemblance? Almost identical. Yeah, me too...
Then we left Montrose and headed for the Arches National Park in Utah. From this point
we were starting to follow the Colorado River, but at this time it was barely more
than a stream with big dreams.
Rt. 50 turned into Interstate 70. So we followed I70 into Utah. We stopped at all the
important sights along the way
Nuff Said?
We continued on to the Moab exit. Here we started following the beginnings of canyonland.
The first half hour was more desert. Here the Colorado was beginning to grow in size.
As the river grew, so did the canyons.
For anyone who's not seen the Grand Canyon or Canyonlands, Do so fast, just on the off chance they somehow disappear. You do not want to miss this! The scenery is dramatic, the size and scope of the canyon walls is enormous, with the Colorado flowing in between. It's not the Grand Canyon, but it has a beauty all it's own.
We followed Route 128 through the Colorado River Recreation Area to Moab Utah. If you get the chance...DO THIS ROAD!
Check out this handsome devil
This was a couple we met along the way. We took pictures for each other. She was fascinated with the motorcycles.
The camping spot tonight is Arches National Park. The campground was full, but the ranger at the entrance to the park suggested we check with the camp ground ranger for possible openings. So this we did, this required an 18 mile drive to the Devils Canyon Campground. Fortunately for us there were a couple of cancelations and we were IN!
Check out the view from our new back porch!
Is this awesome or what?
The sun was still up so with some advice we hiked off to three seperate arches.
Just a little hiking
I hope I get the names associated with the correct pictures here. If not, oh well You'll just have to come and see for your selves.
First stop was Tapestry Arches
As I've said before, every group has one
We must be fortunate indeed, we have two
Next we hiked on to Broken Arch
Note the break in the middle.
After Broken Arch we hiked a bit further to Sandstone Arch
As I said, we have two
Up to this point there has been no cell phone signals in the park at all. This was not unexpected. On the hike back to camp, my phone rang. I actually had a strong signal....in here, check this place out...
If I move ten feet either way the signal is lost. Almost like being in a rock phone booth. On top of the rocks, again no signal at all. Go figure. Doug had another spot on the top, again, about ten feet square. Leave that square and the signal is lost.
Now it's off to bed and rest up for tomorrows ride to Nevada.
